I Am Present to the Dawn

A slight chill in the air breeding wakefulness

a shift in colors, at first, so subtle - black night to deep blue touched with wisps of grey, as gold breaks through the seam between sky and solid ground

a light breeze moves across the sky, its fingers reaching out in passing - painting the top of the world with pastels of pale yellows, pinks and greyish blues

birds float through the sky rather than soar, emanating slowness to the eyelids gently opening to the light

The warmth of sleep clings to me.

A soft cheek presses against mine - I cling to it.

A finger reaches out of the blankets through the air, stretching toward the faded sliver of moon still within the morning sky.

The ethereal spirit of dawn flows in the air I breathe,

in the blood pumping through my heart.

“Welcome,” it whispers. “Welcome to today.”
